East Meadow is a community located within the Town of Hempstead in Long Island, New York. East Meadow is considered a suburb of New York City due to the fact that it is located just 30 miles from Downtown Manhattan and around 86% of its residents commute to the city everyday for work. East Meadow was originally founded as a grazing town for cattle and sheep in 1655, at one point providing the country with over 50% of its wool needs for the time. Eventually, the town transformed into a residential neighborhood with many amenities for its residents, including the Nassau University Medical Center and Veterans Memorial Park.
The nine public schools in East Meadow are operated by the East Meadow Union Free School District. There are five public elementary schools (Barnum Woods Elementary, Bowling Green Elementary, George H. McVey Elementary, Meadowbrook Elementary, and Parkway Elementary), two public middle schools (Woodland Middle School and W. Tresper Clarke Middle School), and one public high school (East Meadow High School). East Meadow Public Library is also open to all residents and visitors to use.
